According to lamarck how did organisms acquire traits?

Certain stimuli could alter a part of an animal, and this change could be passed on to offspring. E.g a giraffe reaching for food would eventually lead to a small increase in neck size. This increase was then passed on to the offspring, which would stretch the neck a little further, etc. etc.
