There are 13 species of finches living on the Galápagos Islands. According to the current scientific hypothesis,
these finches evolved from a species of finch that lived on
the mainland of South America. A few finches must have
become lost and landed on one of the islands. These
finches had to survive in a new environment. Different
pressures caused this new population of finches to evolve
