Evolution is an extremely slow process. It is difficult to obtain direct evidence of evolution in action. Indirect evidence that supports the theory of evolution has been gathered by scientist from many fields. These evidence include:

--> Fossil records: These are data gotten from the remains of organisms preserved mainly in earth's sedimentary rocks. By arranging the fossils according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they have been able to show an evolutionary trend from very simple life forms to complex ones. An EXAMPLE is the evolution of the modern horse (equus) from the dawn horse, eohippu, 60 million years ago.

-->Biochemical similarities: the chemical make-up and biochemical processes of all organisms are very similar. For EXAMPLE, all organisms use the same material and processes for storing, expressing and transmitting genetic information.

--> Molecular records: All organisms store hereditary information in nucleic acids, mainly DNA. In present day evolutionary theory, changes are recorded in these macromolecules by alterations to existing chemical structures. Therefore, the DNA of closely related species should show more similarities than those of distant species. For EXAMPLE, the DNA of humans and Chimpanzees is 98% alike.

--> Embryology: In many cases, the embryo of an organism resembles the embryo of its ancestors during certain very transitory stages of its development. For EXAMPLE, the human embryo has gill slits like a fish at an early stage in its development.
