How do multicellular organisms obtain information about the environment in which they live and why is this important.

Multicellular organisms aren’t better suited to general environments. The words you’re using for them don’t seem relevant: They’re only “more advanced” in the sense of having had adaptations that single-celled organisms haven’t; that doesn’t necessarily make them better. And I don’t know what “acceptable” means in this context; acceptable to whom?

They have certain advantages, but also many disadvantages. They can’t fit into nearly as many places, for one. They’re more susceptible to large-scale mechanical damage (which do you think has a better chance of surviving getting slammed into the shore by a tsunami: a whale or a unicellular alga?).

Probably most significant ly, they almost always breed much, much, much more slowly: look at the whale and alga again. Put on whale in the ocean and it will forever be the only whale in the ocean. Even if you have a breeding pair, all the food they can eat, no predators, and they breed at they would take centuries, at least maximum capacity, it would take almost two decades just to get the population int the double digits. The alga, even reproducing through fission only once a day, would number over a trillion after a month. (And that’s slow. Some bacteria double very 20 minutes). That also means quicker adaptation (which is basically why multicellular organisms usually rely on sex for reproduction, to mix the alleles around more quickly).

The main thing, though, is that multicellular forms, leave the niche occupied by single-celled organisms. They may be better at eating grass, and hunting one another down, but the things that the unicellular organisms are still good at (for example, infecting and parasitizing multicellular creatures) are still there.
