In the Great Lakes, coal plants have contributed to increased amounts of toxic chemicals, such as methyl mercury, to be released into the freshwater ecosystems. There are many types of organisms that have different roles in the environment. Algae undergo photosynthesis and provide energy for the rest of the organisms living in the Great Lakes. Clams obtain their energy from the algae that they eat, while the Redear Sunfish enjoy breaking the clam’s shell as a delicious treat. The top predator, Largemouth Bass, enjoys plenty of Redear Sunfish to satisfy its appetite. Directions: Construct a food chain that contains each of the organisms mentioned above with the appropriate arrows. Also, label each organism's trophic (feeding) level.
