In short, the geography we see today shows that the tectonic plates once all fit together. This was known as Pangaea and the reason for the split was becayse of the movements in the mantles. Tectonic plates is also the reason for earthquakes which is a more logical way to look at it because its proven to be from them. We know that tectonic plates are always moving but when they rub against each other, the stress it puts on both plates will eventually overcome it creating waves that make the ground shake and land to split.
