Rock pocket mice are rodents found in the desert Southwest. They are typically light/tan, but a mutation in the population codes for a darker fur color. The two fur colors are shown in the images here. The area where these mice live typically have a sand with a tan background. However, there are areas of cooled lava from a volcanic eruption 10,000 years ago that deposited black rock. The mice are found on the sand and on the rocks. Researchers set traps to collect samples of mice from the rocks and the sand areas. An analysis of the data for the mice caught in each of the areas would show which trend if natural selection were acting on the different phenotypes?A) A greater number of tan mice would be caught from the traps in the sandy areas while more black mice would be caught on the darker rocks. B) An equal number of tan mice would be caught in both environments, while the black mice would only be found on the darker rocks.
