Phloem and Xylem together forms the vascular tissue. While Xylem transport fluid in the plant , phloem is responsible for transportation of soluble organic substances such as sugar, protein etc. Phloem transports food produced during the process of photosynthesis in leaves to all other non-photosynthesizing body parts such as stem and roots.  The food travels from the leaves to the roots with the assistance of gravity.  

The substance in phloem travel through the “sieve tube members” and “ companion cells” .
