A frameshift mutation is a mutation that leads to a change in the reading frame potentially changing the translation of the gene. 
Insertion and deletion are the types of mutations that may cause a frameshift mutation. By inserting or deleting a base pair or whole sequences of DNA, the reading frame is altered and if these mutations interrupt a codon or are not multiple of three then the final translation of the gene won't be the same thanks to the triplet nature of gene expression by codons.
