Yes! If you cut down the tree, you would see the latest ring from that year would be smaller than most of the others. The more nourishment a tree gets in a year, the bigger the ring is. Human beings bones are actually the same way. (little interesting factoid for ya)

You could probably tell the leaves were wilted as well. That could be an indicator.
