Why are nonvascular plants short and small?

Non-vascular plants are small and short because they have poor transport methods for water, nutrients and other substances which do not allow them to grow large. Non-vascular plants do not have a vascular system (xylem and phloem) which circulates or transports water, nutrients, gases or other substances throughout plant’s parts.
