9.  The Galapagos is an archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Pacific Ocean right in the Equator Line, 605 miles to the west of South America. The Islands are part of Ecuador, which is also the closest land mass to them.
10.   The Galapagos Islands have formed around five million years ago when underwater volcanoes started to rise from the ocean floor, resulting in the formation of around 20 rocky islands and more than 40 islets. There are a total of 19 islands in the Galapagos archipelago, with 13 main and 6 smaller ones. The combined area of the islands is just above 3,000 square miles of land, inhabited by about 25,000 people. The climate on the Galapagos Islands is usually hot and rainy from December to June and fairly cool from June to November. Average temperatures are about 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the hot season and 70 degrees in the cooler period.

14.  All plants and animals that are now native to the islands must have arrived at the islands originally through some form of long-distance dispersal.  The first method is by air in the form of flying or being blown by the wind, and the second method is by sea while swimming or floating, sometimes with the aid of rafts of tangled vegetation. The animals have also aged and become older or have died and left their children to stand in their place.
