They were not the first to discover the structure of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), it was Friedrich Miescher. A french chemist did work on the identification of the DNA's structure.

As after him those who did work on the structure and properties of DNA molecules they were Phoebus Levene and Erwin Chargaff. They performed research work which was based on the previous work of the scientists and research workers. The work before provided the basis for Watson and Carrick to do more extensive research on the DNA's structure and on its properties in more depth.

By using the applications of the x-rays they applied the x-rays on the DNA molecule.As Watson and Carrick  found more about the structure of DNA, as they determined that it has a double helix structure in the year 1952.While continuing there research work on the basis of the previous  research work of the research workers and scientists, both of them determined the actual structure of the molecule.As the used the cardboard cutouts which represented  the individual chemical parts of the four bases and other nucleotide. As though putting together a puzzle Watson and Carrick were able to determine the actual double helix structure of the DNA molecule.
