Atoms can be broken down through processes

The answer is fission. Fission process includes the collision of an atom with a neutron to split the atom into sub-atomic particles with the release of energy (this is how fission atomic bombs detonate). This fission process also occurs naturally in elements such as Uranium through radioactive decay.
