Normally if a cell has accumulated DNA damage, it is unlikely to pass the G2 check point. 
The cell cycle is regulated at three checkpoints to ensure that the cells are ready to proceed through the process of division. At each of these checkpoints, the cell waits to receive signals on whether or not it has carried out the function that should have been completed at the previous stage. The three key check points of the cell cycle are; the cell restriction or growth check point (G1), the DNA synthesis checkpoint G2 and the mitosis or the metaphase checkpoint (M).
