Coral reefs are a vast community of individual organisms called polyps. These little organisms work together to create extensive and varied reefs some of which are the biggest structures on earth. Coral polyps tend to grow in colonies. Each individual polyp is attached to the other. A colony may grow to be quite large such as the so called brain coral which can be over six feet across. Polyps have sticky tentacles with which they use to catch prey for food.
