List the main components of the human alimentary canal and the associated digestive glands

-Salivary glands, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas> secrete digestive juices that enter the alimentary canal through ducts (Accessory digestive glands)
(SGLP)
-Alimentary canal: Oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus

-food is ingested, chewed (oral cavity), and then pushed by toungue into pharynx
-once swallowed, muscles propel it through alimentary canal by peristalsis (alternating waves of contraction and relaxation of the smooth muscles lining the canal)
(perstalsis=process and digest food when lying down)
-muscular ringlike valves, spincters, regulate the passage of food into and out of the stomach
-sphincter keeps food for about 2-6 hrs so stomach acids and enzymes begin digestion
-digestion/nutrient absorption occur in small intestine over 5-6 hrs.
-undigested material> large intestine (12-24 hrs)
-feces stored in rectum and then expelled through anus
