Photosynthesis is the metabolic process whereby green plants obtain their food using energy from sunlight. Photosynthesis, which occurs in the chloroplast organelle, consists of two major stages namely: light dependent and light independent reactions. Light reaction occurs during daylight and involves the breakdown of water molecule by light photons in a process called photolysis. This photolysis brings about the protons needed to generate ATP and NADPH molecules. The ATP and NADPH molecules are needed during the light independent reactions or Calvin cycle to synthesize glucose molecule.
