Sexual reproduction in the Zygomycota (conjugation) involves the production of zygosporangia and zygospores. When conditions become unfavourable, two hyphae called gametangia (type + and type –) become connected by a short bridge and fuse their nuclei (karyogamy). Compatible nuclei within this new cell fuse to form zygotes and after that undergo meiosis. The cell where these events take place becomes surrounded by a thick wall it is called a zygosporangium. When the outermost layers of the zygosporangium disappear the remaining structure is called a zygospore. Zygospores remain dormant until environmental conditions are favourable and then germinate to produce a new thallus or it may give rise to haploid asexual spores (meiosis) via a sporangium.
