Social psychologist Douglas McGregor used the Theory X and Theory Y (two contrasting theories) to explain managers' beliefs that says "what motivates a manager's people can affect the manager's management style".

He called Theory X the authoritarian style and Theory Y the participation style of management.

In Theory X, McGregor believes that if a manager assumes that subordinates are not motivated to work or dislike  their work, the manager will use an authoritarian management style to get things done.

In Theory X, McGregor again states that if a manager assumes that subordinates like their work or are proud of their work and are motivated to take on challenges then the manager is most likely to adopt a participatory style of management.
