Generally I think BMW should expect that Tesla would become their direct competitor from the EV perspective. Initially the EV market was seen as niche when Tesla started, but now it has grown beyond just being a niche, it is becoming a realizable market. Tesla has a competitive edge because they own the advantage of being primary drivers in the area of innovation and even the design done in the EV market. Tesla is sorely focused on EV's compared to other car manufacturers who focuses on non EV models, this gives Tesla market advantage from the R&D point of view. Tesla is ahead of BMW as it relates to EV's.

Government provides incentives for the purchase of EV's so as to reduce carbon emission footprint, this will helps Tesla's market share of EV to keep growing.
