Hans Selye general adaptative syndrome (GAS) described three predictable stages the body uses to respond to stress.

1) Alarm stage

2) Resistance stage

3) Exhaustion stage

1) The alarm stage: The stage prepares an individual to respond accordingly to the stressor they are experiencing. This is the awareness stage where a distress signal is sent to the hypothalamus part of the brain.

2) The resistance stage: The body tries to restrict or adapt to the stressor. The body tries to counteract the physiological changes that happened during the alarm reaction stage.

3)The exhaustion stage: This is the last stage of the general adaptative syndrome. After a series of trial of recovering from the stressor, the body can no longer cope to fight the stress. The individual becomes tired, depression may set in, feeling of anxiety and so on.
