If you hope to one day obtain a job in the foodservice industry, it can’t hurt to start preparing for your future employment now. A common question during a job interview is something along the lines of “give an example of a situation when you…” and the interviewer asks about a soft skill, such as active listening, problem-solving, or conflict resolution. If you take the time to think of these situations and how you would respond to them, you will have a lot of examples ready to go by the time you have an interview!

For this activity, you will be making a series of short videos demonstrating some important aspects and skills that are required for working in the food service industry. Your videos will be a combination of speaking directly to the camera to explain and inform on certain concepts as well as acting out various scenarios to demonstrate these ideas, concepts, and skills in action. You will likely want to find a friend or family member to help you with the acting-out portion.

Let’s go over some of the skills, concepts, and ideas that you will need to explain and creatively demonstrate in your videos:

Explain/Inform
Identify and explain several important employability skills: punctuality, dependability, appropriate appearance
Explain ways to maintain positive personal relationships
Explain why personal and professional etiquette is important
Demonstrate
Demonstrate a scenario (or scenarios) that show punctuality, dependability, and time-management skills in action
Demonstrate personal and professional etiquette in action
Demonstrate active-listening skills to obtain and clarify information
Demonstrate the acceptance of constructive criticism
Now, these video descriptions are very broad, meaning that you have the ability to come up with any kind of scenario or situation that you feel will best express the ideas and concepts required. Just make sure that each scenario is related to and takes place in a kitchen or restaurant environment. Do your best to use props, cue cards, or any other items that will help to express the required information.

Also, before you demonstrate a skill or concept, make sure to say something like, “The following scenario will demonstrate time-management skills.” This way, your teacher will be able to evaluate how well you express each concept and skill.

For information on how you will be graded, please refer to the rubric below.
