Susan is a top-performer in her department. Selected to work on a special project as the manager, she was enthusiastic about the challenge. However, two weeks into the project and two teammates are arguing and clash at almost every interaction. Thinking that giving the teammates some space would cool things down, she directs everyone to work on their own. However, Susan is unnerved that the teammates are barely civil to each other. The project is slipping behind schedule, and Susan finds that she is devoting a great deal of thought and focus on trying to bring the team back together. How should we characterize Susan’s motivation?
