In order to meet demand for two types of usable coal in the U. S., coal suppliers mine raw coal from existing mines, process it into one of the two usable products, and deliver the products to the customer (the "demand region"). To assess the impact on the U. S. coal market of different pollution control strategies, the EPA wants to determine how much raw coal from different mining regions (i. e., suppliers) will be extracted, how much will then be processed into one of the two coal products, and how much of each deliverable product will be sent to meet consumer demands in various regions.
