Experiment: masses

here is your goal for this lesson:

demonstrate proficiency in using a centigram balance to make precise measurements
these supplies are needed:

centigram balance
various small objects
follow these directions:

1. locate a centigram balance. be sure you know how to use it before you weigh an object. what is its accuracy? record it in the blank.

±

2. zeroing: with all masses resting as far to the left as possible and in their "notched" position indicating zero, release the balance arm and check to see if the arm swings equal distances on either side of the balance line. the arm should come to rest so that the line on the right pointer end of the arm and the "zero" position on the right end support line up. if the arm goes higher or lower than it should to achieve balance, then move the threaded rider (usually found under the pan) until a zero reading is obtained.

3. place the object to be weighed on the pan. cause it to balance by adjusting the masses.

4. record the mass with the object identification number. (g stands for gram)

5. return the riders to the "zero" notched position, remove the object, and return the object to the storage place.

determine the mass of ten more objects of your choice. be sure to include ± values.
