However, the existence of some metals termed the Transition metals which have the ability to adopt various oxidation state such as Cu²+ and Cu¹+, Co²+, Co³+ and Co⁴+. and some non-metals such as Nitrogen which can adopt oxidation states +3 and +5. is the reason for the dynamicity of ionic bond formation.

Therefore, the ability of some metals and non metals to adopt more than one oxidation state is the reason why different numbers of metal and nonmetal atoms create ionic bonds together.
