A50 m long section of a 3 inch nominal (88.9 mm od) horizontal steam pipe with no insulation on it provides steam from a boiler to a reaction vessel in a chemical plant. temperature measurements at several locations reveal that the average temperature of the exposed surfaces of the steam pipe is 165°c, while the temperature of the surrounding air is 15°c. the outer surface of the pipe appears to be oxidized, and its emissivity can be estimated to be 0.75. (a) taking the temperature of the surrounding surfaces to also be 15°c, determine the current rate of heat loss from the steam pipe. (b) in order to reduce heat losses, it is proposed to insulate the steam pipe with 4 cm thick fiberglass insulation (k = 0.05 wm-1k-1 ) and to wrap it with aluminum foil (emissivity of 0.1) in order to minimize the radiation losses. determine the % saving in heat losses from the pipe.
