Astudent was completing a public service project cleaning up local landmarks. one landmark is a limestone statue of the town’s founder. the statue was filthy, so the student scrubbed it from top to bottom. when done scrubbing, it was apparent that the statue was also covered with small holes. the student was concerned about whether or not the cleaning caused the damage. he researched what could have caused the damage and found that acid rain is a common cause of damage to limestone landmarks. the sulfuric acid in the rain (h2so4) reacts with limestone (caco3) in a double displacement reaction.

h2so4 + caco3 →

write a letter to the town’s mayor explaining how acid rain damaged the statue. in your reponse, be sure to include:

-how the type of reaction is useful information when predicting products.

-why the number of electrons or charge of each ion is useful information in
predicting products.

-the formulas for the products of the reaction.
be sure to consider the completeness of your response, supporting details, and accurate use of terms.
