Ionic compounds are formed by complete transfer of electron from the cation to anion. So it is mostly directional bond than the covalent bond. As the network solids are a kind of covalent bonds, they are formed by mutual sharing of electrons.

So they are non conducting and hard in nature. The difference between covalent and ionic compounds are that the covalent compounds are non-directional and non conducting in nature compared to ionic compounds.
