1. When solid Potassium chlorate (KCIO3) was heated with a catalyst (solid Manganese
dioxide (MnO2)]. the total volume of dioxygen pas obtained at STP was 75 cm Here, the
final solid product was pomssium chloride(KCI). When the final solid product was heated
with concentrated sulphuric acid, 20 cm of dichlorine gas was obtained at the same
temperature and pressure. (Assume that the molar volume of a gas at STP is Vem mol-).
a) Write the balanced chemical equations for the two reactions above. (Remember that
MnO2 acts as a strong oxidizing agent like KMnO4 in presence of concentrated
H+)
b) Assuming that the amount of chlorine gas liberated depends solely on the amount
of MnO2 and not on KCIO3. find the mole ratio between KCIO3 and MnO2 in the
initial mixture.
c) Prove that the assumption you made in (b) is correct
d) MnO2 is inert in dilute acidic medium but at the same time it functions as a strong
oxidizing agent in the concentrated acidic medium. Explain this.
2. X is a monosubstituted benzene derivative which has the molecular formula C&H:02. It
does not show acidic properties. Moreover, when it was heated with potassium hydroxide
followed by acidification, gave the mixture of Y and Z. Z gives silver mirror with
ammoniacal silver nitrate. Write the structures of X, Y and Z.
3. Do the following conversion without exceeding three steps.
