Students are attempting to demonstrate a reaction of liquid water separating into hydrogen and oxygen gases:
Procedure
Investigation
Step
Step 1
Pour water into a beaker with a small amount of salt and place the
beaker on a digital scale to record the mass.
Step 2
Place two electrodes connected to a battery to create an electric
current in the water
Step 3
Seal the top of the beaker, and observe for any gas bubbles forming
in the liquid water.
What type of reaction does this investigation demonstrate, and as time progresses what will happen to the mass reading on the scale?
