Why vapour pressure is kept very low in mass spectrometery?

I think what celeste meant was that if the pressure were high, the ions wouldn’t be able to pass through the molecules in the air without getting in the way of each other.

By keeping the vapor pressure low, the ions don’t get in the way of the molecules in the air.
