6 To date, palytoxin and maitotoxin have been recognized as the longest carbon chain compounds in nature, except for biopolymers such as nucleic acids, pro- teins, and polysaccharides.

The longest chain in the substituent is C2 therefore it's an ethyl substitent. There are two substituents off this chain, both C1 alkyl group methyl groups. Both methyl groups are on C1 on the complex substituent.

Rule #2: Carbons bonded to a functional group must have the lowest possible carbon number. If there are no functional groups, then any substituent present must have the lowest possible number.
