Now replace a hydrogen in each of your CH_2XYCH 2 XY models with yet another different colored atom. Construct two identical models of a trisubstituted methane molecule, CHXYZCHXYZ, using four different colored atoms attached to a central tetrahedral carbon atom. Compare these models; all the atoms should appear in the same location (rotating your model does not change what it represents.) These two structures would then be considered ‘superimposable’. Interchange any two substituents on one of the carbon atoms on only one of the models. They should no longer be superimposable. Using the solid, wedge, and dashed line notation above, draw both structures of CHXYZCHXYZ.
