One of the oldest known fabric dyes is a substance called indigo (C16H10N202). For
many centuries, people extracted indigo from plants. Starting in the 1800s, indigo
could be made in factories using a new method called the Baeyer-Drewson process.
In the Baeyer-Drewson process, indigo and acetic acid (C2H4O2) form when
nitrobenzaldehyde (C2H5NO3), acetone (C3H60), and water (H20) are combined.
Today, the most common use for indigo is dyeing cotton for blue jeans.
