How did Devils Tower form, and why is it so much
taller than the surrounding landscape?

When the Tower formed around 50 million years ago, it was one to two miles below the Earth's surface. The harder igneous rock of the Tower is more resistant to erosion, and the gray columns of Devils Tower began to stand out above the surrounding landscape.
