Scenario: You and your chemistry partner are working in the lab shown above. You are in the desert far away from civilization so as to not draw attention to your activities. During this process, you pour samples of the clear liquids Methanol and Ethyl Ether into separate beakers in preparation for future steps in the process. Later, you discover that you’ve made the mistake of not labeling either of the beakers! Your lab partner is experiencing side effects from his chemotherapy outside and is already fed up with your ineptitude, so you don’t want to ask him for help in identifying the chemicals. You also realize that the original containers are almost empty, so you can’t simply get more, nor can you contaminate either by testing their miscibility. You don’t know the properties of these chemicals and you can’t look them up on your phone because you have no cell service. Luckily, you see the chemical formulas on the bottles and remember how to draw Lewis Structures. You also remember that your teacher taught you about the relative strengths of IMFs, so you come up with a quick experiment to determine which chemical is which.
