The information of properties of the reactants and substrate that produces provide information about the type of reaction and also helps in classify the chemical reaction.

If there are fewer reactants than the products the reaction is classified as a decomposition reaction. If oxygen is present in the reaction as a reactant it is a combustion reaction. A synthesis reaction occurs if the reactants are more than the products. A single replacement reaction occurs when one ion replaces another.

Other than these reactions there are some other reactions that can be classified with knowing reactants and products.
