The Alien and Changing States of Matter You are sleeping in your bed and are awakened by a bright light coming into your bedroom. Then you hear noises in the kitchen. You know everyone is sleeping, so you get up to investigate. When you enter the kitchen, you are surprised to see a ‘creature’ standing by the kitchen counter looking at a melting ice cube. For some reason you are not afraid, but you know this ‘creature’ is not from Earth. As you walk closer, he turns to you. He tells you he is an alien from a distant planet in another galaxy and that is why he looks different. He is tall, very thin, and green with huge eyes. He asks you what is happening to the ice cube as it melts. Now you have to explain to the alien the process of melting. You know he is smart and will need many details. You are confident the explanation will be scientific because you remember learning all about it during science class with Mrs. Palivoda.

In the space below, write your detailed answer. Make sure you include unit vocabulary: particles, movement, thermal energy, etc.

The alien then asked how the water turns back to ice. Write your description in the space
