C6H5CL is an important solvent and intermediate in the productionof many other chemicals, made by bubbling chlorine gas throughliquid benzene in the presence of ferric chloride catalyst. In an undesired side reaction, the product is further chlorinatedto dichlorobenzene, and in a third reaction the dichlorobenzene ischlorinated to trichlorobenzene. The feed to a chlorinationreactor consists of essentially pure benzene and a technical gradeof chlorine gas (98 wt% CL2, the balance gaseous impurities with anaverage molecular weight of 25) The liquid output from thereactor contains 65 wt% C6H6, 32 wt% C6H5CL, 2.5 wt% C6H4Cl2, and.5% C6H3Cl3. The gaseous output contains only HCl and theimpurities that entered with the chlorine. Find :
1. Percentage by which benzene is in excess,
2. The fractional conversion of benzene,
3. Fractional yield of monochlorobenzen,
4 Mass ratio ofthe gas feed to liquid feed.
