La capa de valencia es la capa más externa de cualquier átomo y corresponde al último nivel de energía. Los electrones que se encuentran en la capa de valencia se denominan electrones de valencia. Todos los elementos forman compuestos gracias a una fuerza de atracción que mantiene unidos los átomos, creando agrupaciones estables, esta fuerza se denomina enlace químico. La formación del enlace químico se explica con la tendencia que tienen todos los átomos de lograr estructuras similares a la del gas noble más cercano dentro de la Tabla Periódica, para adquirir estabilidad, completando ocho electrones en su último nivel de energía. A este comportamiento se le denomina “regla o ley del octeto” y para cumplir con esta regla o ley, los átomos pueden recibir, ceder o compartir electrones. Según la configuración electrónica de cada elemento indicar los electrones de valencia para cada uno.
