Please Help In this lab, you will react magnesium metal with the oxygen in the air by burning the metal. The unbalanced equation for this reaction is Mg(s) + O2(g) → MgO(s): solid magnesium (Mg) reacts with oxygen gas (O2) to produce solid magnesium oxide (MgO).

You will determine the percent yield of magnesium oxide from the experiment. Select and weigh a clean, dry crucible to find the mass of the crucible and lid. Record the mass of the empty crucible and lid in your data table.

Next, cut a small piece of metal from the magnesium ribbon. Select the amount of magnesium you would like to use. Move the slider ball to the desired length of magnesium ribbon. Then, select the Cut button to confirm your size selection.

Now, select the steel wool to remove the oxidized magnesium and expose the magnesium metal. Select the magnesium strip to roll it into a loose coil and place it inside the crucible. Select the crucible to move it to the scale. Record the mass of the crucible, lid, and magnesium in your data table.

Place the crucible on the clay triangle and begin heating the crucible gradually with the Bunsen burner. Turn on the Bunsen burner. Heat the crucible until the burning is complete—around 10 minutes. Turn off the Bunsen burner and allow the crucible to cool for five minutes. Find the mass of the crucible, lid, and contents. Select the crucible to weigh the contents. Record the mass of the crucible, lid, and magnesium oxide in your data table.

At the end of trial one: You’ve completed this experiment. Repeat the same experiment again for a second trial. Select a different starting mass for the magnesium ribbon.

At the end of trial two: You've completed this experiment. Make sure you have all the data recorded in your data table before ending your lab investigation.
