Sodium chloride (Nacl) is an ionic compound . This means it has both cations and anions . The kind of bonding present in this compound is an electrovalent bonding which means there is a transfer of electron .

If sodium chloride is dissolve in water (H2O), the water molecules will dissociate the ions present in sodium chloride. The positive ion(cations)  Na+ , will be surrounded by the partially negative oxygen ion(O2-) while the negative ion(anions) Cl- will be surrounded by the partially positive hydrogen ion(H+). Base on the partially charge nature of water it will require more oxygen ion to surround the strongly positive sodium ion and more hydrogen ion to surround the strongly negative chlorine.

Some of these ions are left behind and this what causes the conductive nature of this compound in water. Ionic compound like Nacl dissolves in water to form an electrolytes.
