To determine the Lewis dot diagram structure for the first compound.

1.Simply count the number of valence electrons for each element.
(Multiply atoms of there is more than 1)
Then add all of them together.

C - 4
3 H - 3 • 1 = 3.
Cl - 7

Follow the instructions and place C in the middle. Then place 3 H surrounding the carbon and also a Cl surrounding the carbon.

Now place in 2 electrons for each bond between each of the atoms. For C - Cl place 2 electrons in between and do this for all of the bonds.

Then place the remaining electrons as a pair on the atom that needs those electrons to have the correct number of valence electrons in this case, Cl.

Now subtract the total number of valence electrons calculated from the valence electrons that you have placed in the structure. It should equal 0.

If that is the case, it is correct. In terms of the molecular shape, because there are 4 things/atoms surrounding the central atom, we describe this as tetrahedral.

Search up online or in text about the different molecular shapes possible.
