Will mark brainliest <3 This experiment will allow you to investigate the law of conservation of mass when a gas is produced in a chemical reaction.
The materials for this experiment are a beaker, a cup, water, balance, two Alka-Seltzer tablets, quart size re-sealable bag.
Your job is to observe the experiment and collect your own data from this demonstration.
Remember to always wear your safety goggles when working with chemicals.
You will start by using a beaker to measure six ounces of water. Pour the water into the cup and put the cup into the re-sealable bag. [Beaker with water is placed in the bag.]
Carefully put the Alka-Seltzer tablets in the bag next to the cup of water. Do not put them in the cup of water. Completely seal the bag. [Alka-Seltzer tablets are placed next to the water in the bag.]
Being careful not to spill the water, use the balance to measure the mass of the bag, cup of water, and Alka-Selzer tablets. Record the mass in your data table. [Bag, beaker of water and Alka-Seltzer tabs are massed together and the reading says 276 grams.]
Without opening the bag, pour the water into bag. Observe what happens and record your observations. [The water is poured in the bag. The Alka-Seltzer and water are bubbling.]
Once the reaction is complete, measure the mass of the contents of the bag. Record the mass in your data table. [The bag is massed again and the reading says 276 grams.]
Use your data and observations to answer the questions in the assignment.

Results/Questions

1.What evidence did you see in the experiment that a chemical reaction took place?
2.When citric acid reacts with baking soda, a salt, water and a gas are produced. What is the name of the gas?
3.In two or more complete sentences, explain the law of conservation of mass and how it relates to this experiment?
4.When vinegar, an acid, is mixed with baking soda, a base, the reaction is similar to the reaction of Alka-Seltzer and water; a salt, water and carbon dioxide are produced. In two or more complete sentences, describe how your knowledge of balancing chemical equations can help you to determine the missing compound.
NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → + H2O + CO2
5.In two or more complete sentences, design an extension of this experiment to determine the mass of the carbon dioxide gas that was produced. Include a hypothesis regarding the mass of the gas in grams.
