The Scientific Method Overview Activity A In-Office Check IOC Notes
Instructions
Read Resource R1, Basic Steps of the Scientific Method, to learn about the steps and related
vocabulary involved for conducting a sound experiment. Then read the different scenarios for
conducting experiments and answer the questions for each below.
1. Consider the following scenario: A group of students are interested in investigating various
environmental factors that affect mold growth on bread. They plan to conduct a series of
experiments using the scientific method.
Student A suggests they propose the following question or problem for one of their experiments:
Why does the amount of light affect the rate of growth of mold on bread?
Student B suggests they propose the following question or problem for one of their experiments:
Does the amount of light affect the growth of mold on bread?
1a. Identify which student's suggestion adheres to the principles of the scientific method: Student A or
Student B?
