Why does the vapor pressure of a solution decrease when an ionic compound is added to it? 1) Most solutes have a positive heat of solvation, causing the temperature of the solution to decrease.
2)There are fewer solvent molecules at the surface, so fewer can vaporize and leave the solution.
3) The mole fraction of solvent is higher, causing a lower vapor pressure.
