In this step, you'll reduce the solution in test tube 4 and extract the copper solids. Read ahead so you understand the
procedure:
1. Using a pipette, remove as much of the liquid as possible from the top of the test tube. Dispense it into the sink with
running water
2. Use a clean pipette to obtain 1 milliliter of hydrochloric acid. Dispense the hydrochloric acid into the test tube. Swirl
the test tube for a few minutes until the blue-green solid at the bottom has completely dissolved. Return the test
tube to the rack. If necessary, you may add an additional 1 to 2 milliliters of hydrochloric acid.
3. Weigh a piece of filter paper on the electronic balance. Record the weight in the table.
4. Set up the Erlenmeyer flask, funnel, and filter paper for filtration. Follow this filtration procedure to get the
copper solids out of the test tube and onto the filter paper.
5. Remove the filter paper from the funnel, and lay it on a folded paper towel (there should be at least two layers).
Open the filter paper. Use the stirring rod to spread out the copper on the filter paper to facilitate drying. Allow the
copper and the filter paper to dry. It will take a couple of hours for them to dry. Alternatively, you may come back to
it the next day. A If you plan to leave your copper, be sure it's in a safe location away from young children and pets.
Make sure the filter paper is covered so no dust or other impurity settles on it.
6. Weigh the dry filter paper (with the solid on it) on the electronic balance. Subtract the mass of the filter paper to
determine the mass of the solid.
