Water (H2O) is placed in an electrolysis machine. The water placed in the machine
begins to bubble. The gas generated is collected in two separate containers. It is
noticed that when a glowing splint is placed in one gas, it flames up, indicating that
it is oxygen gas. In the other gas container, a glowing splint produces a small
popping sound signifying a tiny explosion, which indicates hydrogen gas has been
produced.
